Dr. Zelkowitz has been my oncologist for 20 plus years. I totally trust Dr. Z with all my healthcare matters and would follow him anywhere. He Is personable, very knowledgeable, AlWAYS listens, genuinely cares about his patients and truly advocates for them!! He is very thorough and always on top of health care matters and diagnostic testing results. He ALWAYS respects his patients, advises and involves them in their health care plan/treatment. I am very satisfied with the health care he has provided me through the years and I am so PROUD that he is my doctor . He is excellent!

Dr. Zelkowitz exceeded my expectations and then some. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 days before my visit with him and had no idea what to expect. Dr. Zelkowitz took time to speak with me and my mother and husband (who had lots of questions). He could see I was overwhelmed and explained everything step by step. Additionally, Dr. Zelkowitz moved quickly to help plan for the next steps. I loved his caring and direct approach.

if you’re looking for a Oncologist that specializes in only women care you’re at the right place with Dr. Zelkowitz. Dr Z as I like to call him. under shears of care with him. He has not only educated me take care of me and gotten me through the darkest of times. With personalized care throughout my chemotherapy treatments. he truly does care about each of his patients. Going above and beyond with care compassion. If you’re like me, you challenge everything and he’s always up for a challenge but back it up with science and education. I highly recommend.

Bio

Richard Zelkowitz, MD, is regional medical director of the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute Breast Program in Fairfield Region.

Dr. Zelkowitz is a familiar presence in Fairfield County, having served on the medical staff of Norwalk Hospital since 1997. While there, he served as chief of hematology/oncology and co-director of the cancer center. He also founded and served as medical director of its Smilow Family Breast Health Center.

A staunch patient advocate keenly focused on both their medical and emotional needs, Dr. Zelkowitz initiated the state’s first breast navigator program to help guide patients and families through their cancer journeys. He initiated and developed a lecture series that attracted nationally-recognized speakers, developed a multidisciplinary breast cancer tumor board and launched the state’s first Cold Cap program to prevent alopecia in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

A consultant with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Department of Medicine, Dr. Zelkowitz is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Cancer Care Connecticut Chapter’s Medical Advisory Board, the American Society of Breast Disease and the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group.

He is board-certified in hematology and oncology. Dr. Zelkowitz completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology through the Brown University School of Medicine and a second fellowship in bone marrow transplant through the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. He earned his medical degree from New York Medical College.
