HHC Launches Workplace-Focused Migraine Study
June 06, 2025
Hartford HealthCare and Pfizer have collaborated to develop an innovative treatment and education program within a healthcare system designed to address the impact of migraine in the workplace. This important research initiative hopes to help establish a new standard for supporting employees with migraine while fostering a deeper understanding of the condition among all colleagues.
“Thankfully, there are ways to help such as workplace headache education and management programs to raise awareness, increase understanding, break down stigma and improve diagnosis and treatment of migraine,” said Brian Grosberg, MD, director of the Hartford HealthCare Headache Center, a division of the Ayer Neuroscience Institute. “We think our research will show that this can increase productivity at work and benefit everyone.”
Funded by a grant from Pfizer, the program began with an online survey offered to Hartford HealthCare’s 44,000 colleagues and contract workers. The survey not only identified colleagues in need of migraine treatment but also assessed the baseline understanding of migraine across the workforce.
To help facilitate swift and effective care, colleagues identified as needing support will receive priority access to Hartford HealthCare’s renowned Headache Center, part of the Ayer Neuroscience Institute. Additionally, the program includes a series of brief, engaging educational videos aimed at raising awareness and breaking the stigma associated with migraine in the workplace. This initiative reflects Hartford HealthCare’s deep commitment to enhancing the health, well-being, and productivity of its workforce.
“I am thrilled to see this exciting initiative come to life.” said Chandra C. Abbott, PhD. US Migraine Medical Affairs Team Lead at Pfizer. “This program not only addresses a critical health issue but also hopes to establish a new standard for workplace wellness. Together, we are paving the way for a healthier, more supportive work environment.”
The program addresses a critical issue: migraine affects one in six employees nationwide and can lead to substantial workplace challenges, including higher absenteeism and reduced productivity. Early findings from Hartford HealthCare’s survey revealed colleagues with migraine attacks may lose more than 10 days of productivity annually due to the condition.
Later this year, Dr. Grosberg’s team will conduct a follow-up survey to measure the impact of this innovative program on colleague well-being and workplace dynamics. If successful, Hartford HealthCare and Pfizer plan to share this pioneering program with other major employers, potentially reshaping how migraine is addressed in workplaces worldwide.
“This is more than just a study — it’s a commitment to creating a healthier, more supportive work environment,” said Rose Sheehan, SVP and Chief People Officer for Hartford HealthCare. “We are thrilled to lead the way in this global first and look forward to the profound benefits it will bring to employees and organizations alike.”
