When you’re ready, there are resources to help you legally change your name as part of your gender affirmation journey.
We participate in the Connecticut Transgender ID Project, and each month host a session where transgender, nonbinary and gender expansive Connecticut residents can work with volunteer attorneys from Shipman & Goodwin LLP to change their name or gender marker on such state and federal identity documents as:
- U.S. passport
- Social Security card
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Birth certificate
- Other documents and records.
These sessions are free and coincide with the Center’s LGBTQ+ support group meeting so people can benefit from both resources. The attorneys answer questions, take personal oaths on forms when needed, give the packet to the person seeking the name change, and find them the appropriate probate court. They will even go to court if asked.
To sign up for a free legal session, go to CGH: Trans ID Clinic (signupgenius.com).

We also host free monthly legal aid clinics with attorneys from the firm Shipman & Goodwin LLP to support patients and others through the process of changing legal documents. Appointments are needed, so call us if you want to make one.
