Conditions We Treat

Neuromuscular disorders are complex and each person’s experience is unique. It’s important to be treated by an experienced multidisciplinary team like that at the Ayer Neuroscience Institute.

Marked by changes in sensation such as numbess or tingling, muscle weakness, trouble moving and balance problems, neuromuscular disorders result when the nerves or muscles in your body don’t function properly. This can disrupt communication between the nervous system and your muscles, affecting the way your muscles work and allowing them to weaken and waste away.

Diagnosing Neuromuscular Disorders

To diagnose a neuromuscular disorder, our providers first start with a thorough examination, including medical and family history, and a check of reflexes and muscle strength. From there, the following tests might be ordered:

  • Blood test to look for elevated enzymes
  • MRI scan of the brain and spinal cord
  • Lumbar puncture, also called a spinal tap, to examine the cerebrospinal fluid
  • Electromyogram (EMG) to record the electrical activity in the muscles
  • Nerve conduction study to examine how well signals travel in the body from nerve to muscle
  • Muscle biopsy to examine a sample of muscle tissue more closely
  • Genetic testing to look for gene mutations
