Cedar Mountain Commons becomes home for couple in the town they built

Ever dreamed of visiting Thailand, Russia, Australia or other exotic points on the map? Clifford and Jane Stamm have likely been there.

Even before globetrotting, they kept a non-stop pace of life with Mr. Stamm often working seven days a week. Now they have slowed down, enjoying retirement at Cedar Mountain Commons, an independent and assisted living community located at 3 John H. Stewart Drive. Married for 64 years, they have settled into their customized apartment which is comfortably decorated with family photos, their clock collection, owl figurines and travel mementoes.

It was a long road traveled – literally since Stamm Construction Co. was instrumental in constructing countless miles of streets and sewer projects to transform Newington from a sleepy farm town to a bustling commuter hub.

The two met after World War II when Jane moved across the street from “Skip.” He had served with a tank destroyer battalion in Europe under Gen. George S. Patton and worked with his father until he decided to start his own business. “We were engaged for five years. Every time we set a date he’d say we had to buy another piece of equipment or truck,” she recalled. “But he was very much worth waiting for.”

They remained in the town they loved, raising a son and daughter. Building roads and sewers kept the construction company going full speed – “In a jam? Call Stamm.” The company employed 35 workers and Skip could often be found actually in the ditches showing how something needed to be done. “I always liked playing in the dirt,” he joked.

Having quit her office job when she got married, Mrs. Stamm was involved with almost every service organization, “The Junior Woman’s Club, the Garden Club, you name it,” she said. She is proud that the women’s efforts resulted in a regional community center, beautification projects and much more.

After decades of success, Mr. Stamm sold the company to his nephew who has continued the business. They occasionally would visit friends and former neighbors who had moved to Cedar Mountain Commons. In December 2016, they too made the transition after a studio and one-bedroom apartment were combined, enhanced by their own finishing touches. They both remained active in Newington until he took ill late last year.

Now comfortably settled at Cedar Mountain Commons, the couple has adjusted to a slower pace of life. They are reassured that there is nursing staff to monitor his health regularly and assist them both to dining. Mrs. Stamm occasionally participates in the arts and crafts, plays cards and attends the musical programs.

“It’s nice here; it’s homey,” she said, adding that she is glad that they are still living in the town they built.
