Kalin Receives Burlingame Award for Anxiety Research

Dr. Ned H. Kalin is the 2020 C. Charles Burlingame, MD Award winner, an announcement by the the Institute of Living (IOL) delayed by the pandemic.

Dr. Kalin is Hedberg Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is also director of the Health Emotions Research Institute and the Lane Neuroimaging Laboratory, a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin and an affiliate scientist at the Wisconsin Regional Primate Center and Harlow Primate Laboratory.

Dr. Kalin’s research focuses on uncovering the basic mechanisms that relate stress to the development of psychopathology, and understanding the mechanisms that cause some children to be vulnerable to developing anxiety and depression.

Besides his academic and research work, Dr. Kalin is the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Psychiatry, and co-editor for the international journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. In 2015, he was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and, in 2017, he was inducted as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

“Ned Kalin is a towering figure in American psychiatry,” said Harold “Hank” Schwartz, MD, psychiatrist-in-chief emeritus, IOL. “He has truly transformed our understanding of anxiety. He is a triple threat in academic medicine: a great clinician, teacher and researcher. He checks all of those boxes.”

The 2002 Burlingame Award recipient Charles B. Nemeroff, MD, PhD, nominated Dr. Kalin, saying, “His basic research on understanding the pathophysiological basis for anxiety disorders, the role of early life events in risk for anxiety disorders, and the molecular mechanisms that mediate this effect has fundamentally changed the field.”

Dr. Kalin delivered the annual Burlingame Award Lecture Grand Rounds, virtually, on “The Childhood Risk to Develop Anxiety and Depression: A Translational Neuroscience Approach,” followed by a resident case conference.

The Burlingame Award, now in its 33rd year, is presented annually in recognition of outstanding leadership and lifetime achievement in psychiatric research and education. The award is in honor of C. Charles Burlingame, MD, the former superintendent of The Hartford Retreat, the previous name of the IOL.

Pending COVID-19 protocols, the 2021 C. Charles Burlingame Award will resume in-person events in the fall.
