Be Safe and Have Sun
August 11, 2021
Who doesn’t love a beautiful sunny day? But when having fun in the sun, it’s important to protect your skin from sun damage.
What causes sun damage?
Sun damage is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A sunburn is a type of skin damage. Sunlight can also cause skin aging, eye damage, and skin cancer, the most common of all cancers.
4 ways to protect yourself
- Cover up – Clothing, including a wide brimmed hat that shades your eyes, ears, face, and neck, helps protect against the sun’s UV rays.
- Apply – then reapply- In general, it’s a good idea to apply sunscreen liberally to all uncovered skin. Try to use sunscreens with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of 15 or higher.
- Stay on the shady side- Shade can help protect you from the sun’s rays, especially during the peak sunlight hours of 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Get the right specs- If your sunglasses are older, it may be time to get a new pair. Look for ones that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays.
