Modern Minds is a limited series podcast brought to you by the Hartford Healthcare Behavioral Health Network and features a range of innovative and creative guests, all at the forefront of the mental health revolution. They’re some of the most fascinating thought leaders and change agents whose ideas and activities re driving the mental health movement forward.
“This is not just your ordinary podcast,” says Javeed Sukhera, MD, chair of psychiatry at the IOL and chief of psychiatry at Hartford Hospital. “It’s an honest, hopefully hard-hitting look at many of the issues we face in the behavioral health space today. It’s also a great way to commemorate the IOL’s 200th anniversary — our teams have always been thought leaders. We are proud to showcase them through a new platform.”
International guests join IOL experts for timely mental health topics
The first episode interviews Ken Duckworth, MD, chief medical officer for National Alliance on Mental Illness who recently authored NAMI’s first book, “You Are Not Alone: The NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health ― With Advice from Experts and Wisdom from Real People and Families.” The book is a resource for individuals and families seeking expert guidance on diagnosis, treatment and recovery — and many times the expert guidance comes from real people who have experienced behavioral health issues themselves.
Additional guest Emi Netfeld is the author of the book “Acceptance,” a memoir of her journey through foster care and homelessness, interrogating the true meanings of resilience, ambition, and success. A dynamic, sought-after speaker, Netfeld can be found on podcasts and leading conference keynotes discussing her passion about mental health, helping young people navigate their careers, and the connection between engineering and creativity.
Also featured is Karen Kangas, PhD, director of recovery and family affairs at the HHC Institute of Living who discusses the importance of recovery support specialists and lived experience. Kangas is the founder of the Recovery Leadership Academy at the Behavioral Health Network, which helps prepare people in recovery from a psychiatric or substance use disorder, or family members of people in recovery, to become certified recovery support specialists.
Podcast series Host Mark Henick is a regular media commentator and TEDx talk presenter providing a mental health angle on a diverse range of stories, having appeared in hundreds of on camera segments, radio spots, print article and online features. His first book, “So-Called Normal: A Memoir of Family, Depression and Resilience,” is available worldwide from HarperCollins.
Next up in the podcast series is “Thriving in the wild” which examines the subject of architecture and the importance of environmental design and the need for green and blue space in both rural and urban settings for our mental health.
Through 2024, the IOL is celebrating its 200th anniversary with events on campus and in the community to showcase the innovative behavioral health care services offered.
