Why rest really matters
Taking time to rest isn’t just a luxury — it’s a necessity.
“While working can be very rewarding, especially in a field like healthcare, the demands of the work, coupled with balancing personal responsibilities, can also contribute to stress,” says Dr. Sicley-Rogers.
“Rest allows us to truly enjoy and savor experiences outside of work, whether that includes reconnecting with loved ones, practicing self-care or engaging in a favorite hobby.”
The benefits? Reduced stress, better sleep and mood, more energy and motivation. And a bonus for your boss — improved productivity when you return.

Start strong with a plan.
Before your PTO begins, work with your supervisor and team to create a coverage plan.
Knowing who’s handling what can help you truly unplug. And don’t forget to set aside time to catch up when you’re back to make your return feel a lot less overwhelming.
3 ways to disconnect and recharge
Ready to truly relax on your PTO — not just physically, but mentally too? Dr. Sicley-Rogers shares three simple strategies to help you unplug, unwind and return to work refreshed:
1. Set your away message.
Before you log-off, craft a clear out-of-office reply that sets expectations and directs people to someone who can help in your absence.
This small step reduces pressure on you to stay connected, and gives your coworkers permission to manage without you.
2. Silence notifications.
Turn off email, Teams and calendar notifications on your phone. Or better yet, remove your work apps entirely for your vacation.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of “just checking in.” Even a quick glance at your inbox can put you back in work mode.
3. Be present.
Mindfulness is one of the best ways to let go of stress.
“Practice mindfulness — paying attention on purpose — in everything you do. It can help you naturally disconnect from work,” she says.
Pay attention to the sights and sounds around you. It will help you stay in the moment and enjoy your well deserved time off.

Still feel guilty about relaxing?
You’re not alone — but it helps to reframe what rest really is.
“Relaxing is a productive way to spend our time because it’s such an integral part of well-being,” says Dr. Sicley-Rogers.
Whether you prefer to stay busy or simply relax on PTO, the key is to be kind to yourself.
“Be compassionate with yourself. How you spend your time off is personal and completely up to you. My hope is that no matter what you do, you’re able to decompress and experience joy.”
