What to expect after an abnormal mammogram.
If your mammogram shows something unusual, it doesn’t necessarily mean cancer – but it does mean more information is needed. Our team helps you get clear answers.
Here’s what may happen next:
- Follow-up imaging: Additional tests such as a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, breast MRI or contrast-enhanced mammography may be recommended for a closer look.
- Biopsy, if needed: If an area remains concerning, a minimally invasive, image-guided biopsy may be performed by expert, breast fellowship-trained radiologists.
- Timely clinical evaluation: You’ll meet with a breast surgeon or advanced breast health practitioners quickly, as soon as the same day in some locations.
- Genetic counseling, if appropriate: Based on your personal and family history, genetic testing may be recommended, with access to consultations with certified genetic counselors.

- Breast surgery: Our surgeons perform a full range of breast operations such as lumpectomy (also called partial mastectomy), mastectomy with same-day reconstruction when possible and lymph node procedures.
- Breast conservation therapy: Surgery, usually a lumpectomy, removes the cancer while preserving as much breast tissue as possible.
- Breast reconstruction: Both implant-based and tissue-based (such as DIEP flap) procedures are available, depending on your individual needs and medical candidacy.
- Oncoplastic and minimally invasive techniques: Our surgeons use advanced approaches to provide the best cosmetic result with the fastest healing.
- Medical oncology: Your treatment may include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other targeted therapies – all personalized to your diagnosis, stage and specific breast cancer type.
- Radiation therapy: Advanced radiation techniques use precise, high-energy beams to treat breast cancer cells while protecting nearby healthy tissue.
- Integrative therapies: Options like acupuncture, massage, Reiki and guided relaxation are available to help with symptom management and stress relief.
