Repairs

Hernias are repaired through various surgical approaches. Digestive Health Institute hernia specialists are not only skilled in the various traditional and minimally invasive surgical approaches to hernia repair, we also have the support of an entire institute of specialists and researchers.

Our approach is collaborative and we confer with others on every case, drawing on the strength of the institute to determine a tailored care plan for each patient. This is done without multiple appointments for you. It’s simply the way we operate.

How Surgical Repair Works

Think of surgical hernia repair as putting tissue back where it belongs. Steps include:

  • Making incisions. We use one larger incision for traditional open surgery or several smaller ones for laprascopic and robot-assisted approaches. These are made over or near the hernia.
  • Repositioning the herniated tissue back into place. We will often cover the weakened area with surgical mesh for added support.
  • Repairing the nearby tissue.

Types of Surgical Repair

Surgical hernia repair techniques are typically dictated by the hernia’s location. We offer the following:

  • Open tension free mesh repair
  • Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair
  • Open umbilical hernia repair with or without mesh
  • Laparoscopic umbilical/ventral/incisional hernia repair with mesh
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction (open and minimally invasive)
  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR)
  • Spigelian hernia repair
  • Lumbar repair
  • Parastomal hernia repair
