The goal with surgical hernia repair is to help you return to enjoying life and all its activities as quickly as possible.
Uncomplicated hernia repair surgery is an outpatient procedure and you will go home the same day and recovery will last one to three weeks. For more complex cases, you may need to stay a night or two in the hospital afterward and recovery will take three to six weeks.
While you’re recovering, we ask that you follow a few guidelines to ensure your surgery is a success. These include:
- Not lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for several weeks. We will tell you when it’s safe again.
- Taking medications as prescribed. We minimize opioid use by prescribing a combination of anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and neuro-modulator medications to keep you comfortable.
- Attending physical therapy sessions. These members of our team will guide you to move and avoid pain right after surgery while restoring your physical function and fitness. The goal is to make daily tasks like walking, climbing stairs or getting in and out of bed easier and pain-free.
