The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute team understands that patients have physical and emotional needs as a result of their treatment. Removing the disease can change the body’s appearance. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause hair loss.
To get help, patients from across the system can visit the Backus Boutique for an array of personal care and support items such as special clothing, bathing suits, prostheses, wigs and other items to restore confidence and help heal the mind, body and soul during and after treatment.
In addition to a Cancer Care Resource Library and the Backus Center for Healthcare Integration - where patients can schedule appointments for Reiki, guided imagery and other integrative therapies – the Boutique offers:
- The Jacki and other specialized clothing for women who have had a mastectomy
- Hair alternatives, including a selection of hats, head wraps and wigs
- Non-metallic deodorants and skin care products
- Skin lotions and toiletries, including Miaderm and Calendula, which are recommended for radiation patients
- Inspirational items and gifts
Cancer Institute staff are also able to provide referrals to other community organizations and shops for specialty items across the state. These lists are provided for your convenience and should not be considered an endorsement.
