Voice is one of the most intimate and identifiable aspects of a person, and many patients benefit from therapy to identify and achieve a voice they feel fits their identity.
The Center for Gender Health offers access to licensed, certified speech-language pathologists with specialized gender-affirming voice training in an atmosphere that encourages voice and communication development to align with your gender expression.
What Can I Expect?
At the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist will:
- Discuss with you how you perceive your voice and how it fits in your life.
- Use instruments to measure your voice and its potential.
- Professionally observe your voice and its tendencies to see where to begin.
- Educate you on how to best care for your voice and explain how to get the most out of therapy.
- Observe your communication style outside of your voice, as well as what it sounds like when you use your voice for things other than speech, such as coughing and throat clearing.
- Set achievable and realistic goals with you.
After the evaluation, we usually recommend 12 weekly treatment sessions to work toward your goals, and continuously check in on your progression. Home practice is vital to your success.
How Can I Get Started?
For insurance to cover your therapy, you will need a referral from your doctor.
