Angie Levy was an upbeat, positive woman who devoted her life to others, even during her nine-year battle with breast cancer. When she finally succumbed at age 36, her friends and loved ones created the Angie’s Spa Cancer Foundation, providing special comforts for patients undergoing chemotherapy: massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga and even manicures and haircuts.
The practice is called integrative medicine: relaxing and healing techniques that ease the side effects of oncology treatment. They’re proven to enhance outcomes—and Angie’s Spa makes them possible at hospitals across America, including Hartford Hospital.
That’s how Virginia Murphy was able to enjoy free massage therapy throughout her chemotherapy treatments. “I could see how relaxed she was after her first massage,” recalls her husband, Bill. “She once told me that the massages were better than morphine.”
Sadly, Virginia died in May, surrounded by her family—but not before she and Bill decided to pay the kindness forward. They donated $3,500 to Angie’s Spa, honoring the Hartford Hospital staff who cared for her. The Foundation matched the gift for a total of $6,500.
More patients will share the positive energy because the Murphys and Angie’s Spa connected them with extra tender loving care through Hartford HealthCare Giving.
